Hello, from Washington State!

It has been an honor to serve on the Academy of Forensic Nursing (AFN) General Board of Directors in 2024. I would like you to consider me for the opportunity to expand my responsibilities and serve on the AFN Executive Board as Secretary. I would like to share how I have demonstrated my dedication to the AFN mission of scholarship, education, and service.

Education:

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from the University of Washington, which I believe provides a unique insight into understanding the work surrounding victims and offenders and navigating related social systems. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing Education from Western Governors University with a Capstone project developing a BSN curriculum on Non-Fatal Strangulation, and I am currently enrolled in the DNP program at Chamberlain University.

Scholarship:

I have attempted to remain active in my role as a Master's prepared nurse, with a focus on educating others. Some examples of my commitment include:

  • Co-author of first peer-reviewed article submission from Violence and Behavior SIG

  • Contributing author to two chapters of a pending book publication on Violence Against Women

  • Presentation on the Importance of Screening for IPV and Human Trafficking in a Healthcare Setting at the International Academy of Law and Mental Health Congress in Barcelona, Spain

  • Virtual presentation for IAFN on IPV and the Pregnant Patient: A Case Study

Service:

My service to the community is active and diverse, as this is one way forensic nurses significantly impact the community. Below are examples of my ongoing activities:

  • Working full time as SANE Program Coordinator and performing adult and pediatric SANE exams

  • Provide SANE and strangulation expert witness consultation and testimony

  • Providing education in my local community, including speaking to local nursing students about opportunities in forensic nursing, teaching local law enforcement, Navy SAPR advocates, medical residents, and other medical professionals about forensic nursing, and assisting with critical incident debriefing at a local high school.

Scientific Agencies

  • Current member of the General Board of Directors of the Academy of Forensic Nurses (AFN)

  • Chair of the AFN Education Committee since October 2024

  • Co-Chair and founding member of the AFN Harm Reduction SIG in 2024

  • Founding member of AFN Violence and Behavior SIG

  • Current member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) since 2022

  • Current member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) since 2023

  • Current Member of Nurses United Against Human Trafficking (NUAHT) since 2023

I hope my commitment to serving individuals and communities impacted by violence and my excitement for forensic care are always evident. I am proud to serve the AFN community, and I truly hope you will consider me for this honor. Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

Natalie Evenson MSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, IVSE-C
