It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2023 Alaska Conference: Forensics in the Last Frontier. This conference strives to share information from national experts in trauma-informed care, documentation, legal issues, and interviewing of survivors of violence to explore best practices in forensic healthcare.

Foundations of Trauma Informed Care

Trauma – defined in the broadest aspect – is an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening and has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning. Such traumas can occur in the context of individual, interpersonal, or structural experiences. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is frequently referenced yet there is much variability in how it is applied. This session will provide a framework of applying TIC within a healthcare perspective.

In two-hours, this interactive session will demonstrate patient interviews and history-taking within the context of trauma-informed care. Participants will be asked to actively participate via Q&A and chat.

Documentation Dissection Activity

This two-hour activity session will incorporate various case presentations and different documentation modalities (narrative, graphical, and photographic) in order to demonstrate the forensic value of patient charts.

Legal – It Doesn't Have to be a Scary Activity
Activity & Panel
This two-hour activity is designed to promote preparation and confidence of healthcare personnel when participating in depositions and trials. This session will incorporate role play, scenarios, and demonstrations of fact witness and expert witness roles that healthcare professionals may experience in the legal system.

This activity is pending approval from the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) for Interprofessional Continuing Education Credit. Professions include Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, and Social work. ANMC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
