Medical evidence is presented in criminal court cases, ranging from sexual assault to driving under the influence, in which medical issues are relevant or central to the pursuit of justice. Such evidence often plays a pivotal role in the outcome of such cases. It is imperative the trier of fact be presented with accurate information regarding all case-related evidence to reach an appropriate and just decision. This requires attorneys to effectively and properly present medical facts and evidence to the trier of fact to facilitate their full understanding of the scope and impact of the medical issues and evidence.
Forensic nurses can step away from the bedside and off the witness stand to move behind the scenes to identify, interpret and research the relevant medical issues in criminal cases. This educational session will highlight how forensic nurses can leverage their critical thinking, analysis skills, and medical knowledge to facilitate the effective utilization of medical evidence in criminal courts.
