YOU MIGHT “KNOW IT WHEN YOU SEE IT,” BUT DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT TO PREVENT CRIME? HOW PORNOGRAPHY IMPACTS BEHAVIOR: RECOGNITION AND INTERVENTION
Presented by End Violence Against Women International
Date: May 9, 2022
Time: 12:00 - 1:15pm PT
Presenter: Wendy Patrick, JD, PhD
“Pornography” is a loaded term, often used vaguely or metaphorically, but understood to describe sexually graphic content. Such content is eschewed morally, ethically, and legally depending on the apparent ages of the actors. But commercialized sexual content also prompts dehumanization, unethical behavior, exploitation, human trafficking, internet crimes against children, and more. Because possession of explicit sexual material may be tied to a wide variety of criminal behavior, this program will explore the relevance, predictive value, and admissibility of this type of evidence in preventing crime through early intervention. It will discuss how detecting evidence of pornography use can inform victim witness advocates, service providers, as well as law enforcement professionals about its potential impact on other behavior. Because prediction is prevention, this program will discuss how detecting the use of pornography can impact case investigation, victim care, and even restorative justice.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
Identify types of criminal behavior that are motivated by viewing pornography
Distinguish between different types of adult material tied to sexual aggression
Strategize investigative methodology designed to explore the use of pornography
Evaluate the impact pornography use has on the perpetrator-victim dynamic
