Hey there,
was wondering if there were any forensic nurses from a level one trauma available to speak with the trauma coordinator at the facility in which I work. We are one of only 3 programs in the state of Ohio that have full time forensics. Program one is building and program 2 is not a level one trauma center. Though I can't speak for these facilities I don't feel as though they represent the forensic nursing lens as well as our program is working towards.
I asked to be added to trauma pages so that forensics could be available to determine if the patient is appropriate for forensics rather than to wait to be consulted- which often gets missed. According to our data it takes providers ~ 63 minutes to consult a forensic nurse and I would like to do better.
Our focus forensically is sexual assault, simple assault, IPV, GSW, Burns, Stab wounds, HT, Elder Abuse, and Bites. We are a relatively new program and been providing care for about a year.
Please and thank you! :)

Mindy,
Natalie and I work at a Level 1 trauma center and have 7 nurses and we cover 24/7. We se all victims of violence. We get our pages through our diagnotes system of paging.
We also self-refer, so when we get in an interpersonal violence patient and we see their chief complaint is 'assault' we just go see the patient without waiting on a consult.
The patient can decline our services and then we just write a declination note and provide resources.
I or Natalie can speak with whoever you need us to speak to.

Barb Bachmeier
Mindy,
I work at a level 1 trauma center in WV- and am desperately advocating for full-time forensic nurse program here. Currently, we work with on-call staff only (I'm the only full-time forensic nurse in the state). I would love to talk with you and others about the modeling of a program as I need stakeholder buy in to get movement here. Help please!
Yes I work with Barb and we are included in every trauma page. I feel it is important to talk with medics sometimes when they bring in the patient. Also, we collect the clothing ASAP to preserve any evidence.
Mindy,
Would be happy to speak with your folks.
