Patients presenting with a history of strangulation may not always have visible physical findings in both fatal and nonfatal cases. The absence of obvious injuries had resulted in under-evaluation of patients, which had led to serious internal injuries, permanent disability, or death sometimes days or weeks after the strangulation event. Health care providers may not always have the knowledge to understand the importance of performing a thorough medical evaluation for those patients presenting with a history of strangulation.
During this presentation, the team will explain the significance of accurate assessment for potential strangulation injuries, and identify pertinent components of strangulation documentation as guided by a strangulation assessment tool that will be provided to you as a resource at the end of the training and discuss guidelines and considerations for patient management. An unfolding case study of an adult and pediatric patient is presented throughout.
