Amber Thomas Wagenschutz
JD, CPCU – Senior Counsel, Corewell Health
Amber Thomas Wagenschutz has been an attorney since 2006, when she started her career as a litigating attorney in the Corporate Law Department of a Fortune 50 insurance company. She spent several years defending the organization and its insureds in various legal matters, up to and including full jury trials. Thereafter, she transitioned into claims and litigation management, overseeing teams of claim handlers and outside defense attorneys on claims decisions, litigation strategy, resolutions, and trials. She has worked for a state-created automobile reinsurance program, overseeing claims and litigation. She was also asked to assist another major insurance carrier in the overhaul of their claims management program involving Medicare reimbursements. In 2018, Wagenschutz decided to transition away from automobile and property insurance claims and litigation, at which point she came to work for Corewell Health (then Beaumont Health) as an attorney in their Legal Department. In that role, she retains and manages outside counsel in the defense of medical malpractice litigation, and provides support to medical staff involved in these cases. She regularly provides training and education on various legal topics to executive, administrative, and medical staff. Wagenschutz has been a leader in the integration of the legacy Beaumont and Spectrum Health systems into the new Corewell Health, and serves on various interdisciplinary corporate committees aimed at improving quality, patient safety, and experience. She is married with one teenage daughter, so when she is not working, her time is typically spent chauffeuring her daughter to volleyball practices and tournaments, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and playing with her three oversized dogs.
